Important Information for Upcoming 2019 Season

Did you miss the XC Meeting?

No worries below is a quick bullet list of the most important items:

  • Summer calendar can be found here.  While summer workouts are not mandatory they are very important if an athlete expects to have success for the upcoming fall.

  • Physical must be completed and turned in by August 5th which is our first day of practice!

  • Our first meet will be August 16th, which is before school starts and why it is so important to be at the first two weeks of practice. If your family already has travel plans for those weeks we understand. All we ask is that you communicate this with us and realize your student-athlete may not be chosen to go to that first meet.

Boys and Girls Track Schedule for 2019

Practice for Track will begin on January 22nd (The day after MLK day). We are attempting to be as flexible as possible for practice and will be offering practice opportunities before school and after school. The expectation is athletes attend at least one practice a day and communicate beforehand which practice they will attending. More details about practice options will be communicated over the next couple of weeks.

If you are playing another winter/spring sport that is great!!! Play that sport and don’t miss any practices or games. However, come talk to the track coaches and we will work out a plan to get you to some practices, develop adjusted workouts to prevent injury or overuse, and figure out which meets you can make. The District Meet which is the only one that matters when qualifying for regionals is Tuesday/Wednesday April 2-3. Meaning there is rarely a conflict with other sports for the district meet so even if your participation during the rest of the season is limited a little investment can still be worth your while.

Below is the boys and girls schedule.

Week 5 Schedule / Season Update

See the below attachment for details about this week. Results from this past week can be found under the results tab. We are off to a great start this season and us coaches are very excited about our progress so far! However, we have also reached the part of the season where workouts get more difficult and we really try to push our thresholds to remain competitive in one of the toughest districts in Texas.

Outside of our runners working hard to reach their full potential there are other great things happening with Bowie Running. Our fundraiser ends this week and we have raised almost $10,000! This money will allow us to purchase new uniforms in the near future and invest in other equipment that will make our runners’ experiences even better. For a last minute donation please visit the link below.

2018 Bowie Cross Country Fundraiser

Also we are very excited about our growing numbers. We have close to 80 runners now, including many middle schoolers from Bailey! If you know anybody in our community who loves running or just wants to be a part of an inclusive family please send them our way. We will work with all ages and do our best to make everyone’s experience with running as great as possible. Our goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle and create a self-discipline that will last long into adulthood.

Week 3 / Lockhart Meet Information

Bulldawg Nation, we have had a great two weeks so far! I cannot describe how excited I am for the rest of the season!!

Some important information about this next week —

School starts on Monday and we have our first official meet Saturday at Lockhart. We will not practice the first day of school, but we do ask that our runners do a workout on their own either before or after school. The rest of the practice schedule and meet information can be found in the link below.

Bowie XC Week 3 Schedule – Sheet1 (1)

This past week we had our time trials. The runners ran a two mile course after a hard week of working out. After looking at those times and taking into account effort, experience, and general ability the coaches put together the rosters below. In the rosters you can also found the time trial times from this past Friday. Whichever roster runners are on will determine which race they race in this Saturday.

First Week Update, Parent Meeting, and Fundraising Info

The team has enjoyed a great first week that will culminate tomorrow (Friday) with a Long Run at the Circle C Soccer Fields. It is important for the runners to use this weekend to rest and let their bodies recover from a taxing opening week.

I also wanted to extend a big thank you to the parents for getting those physicals in and for signing our team rules sheet and sending that back in a timely manner. The next big item on our agenda for parent involvement is our Beginning of the Year Parent / Booster Club meeting next Tuesday August 14 @ 6:30pm in the Bowie Library. All parents/guardians are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend as there will be plenty of information about the season, opportunities to buy merchandise, and important booster club information.

Finally, we will launch our online fundraiser next Wednesday (Aug 15) with Vertical Raise. The runners should have brought home an instruction/email sheet about the fundraiser. All the athletes need to do is bring at least 2o emails of family members / family friends who might be willing to donate money by next Wednesday. Runners can write these emails down or save them into their Notes section on their phone. Below is a digital copy of the Fundraiser Instructions.

Thanks for a great first week!

Bowie Cross Country Team Rules

SEASON BEGINS AUGUST 6TH

OUR FIRST PRACTICE OF THE 2018-2019 SEASON WILL BE MONDAY AUGUST 6TH AT 7:00 AM. NOTE THAT THE START TIME HAS BEEN MOVED UP BECAUSE IT IS JUST SIMPLY TOO HOT TO START ANY LATER IN THE DAY.

Summer Workout Schedule

Summer workouts start June 4th! Below is a schedule for all summer workouts. We plan on meeting every Monday at 7:30am at the Circle C Soccer Fields for Long Runs and every Wednesday at the Bowie Track for Speed Workouts. Workouts will last approximately 1 hour. Everybody is welcome including little siblings, friends, and even parents. Working out is so much easier and more fun when you do it with others. That is why we are doing these summer workouts in the first place! I understand if there are family vacations or other conflicts. That’s why these workouts are optional, but the expectation is if you are in town that you do your absolute best to make each workout.

Bowie XC Summer Calendar – 2018

Also we have a tentative workout / meet calendar for our upcoming fall season — also attached below. Meets could change as we are waiting on a few confirmations, and workouts change all the time depending on weather, field conditions, injuries, and team needs. It is very important for athletes to come into Cross Country with a solid base to prevent injury and maximize performance. That is why summer workouts are so important!

Cross Country Season is Here

We are excited and ready for our 2017 season.  We will start practice at 7:30am tomorrow, Aug. 7th, on the Bowie track. Please be on the track between 7:15-7:30am for roll call, and bring your water jug/bottle.  Our practices will run around 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours everyday.

We are also excited to introduce our new coaches to XC.
Coach Marcos Guerra is coming over from Bailey MS to coach XC and Track this year.  We were very fortunate that he was able to come help coach our District Champion track teams last season.  He is a long time coach and avid runner.
Coach Dalton Pool is transferring from Anderson HS to come back to the HS that he graduated from in 2010 and was one of our top Varsity XC runners.  He has three years of teaching and coaching experience over at Anderson HS.  He will be teaching some World Geography and History classes at Bowie.  He will also be helping to coach our Track long distance runners.

I will always be grateful for Coach Heather Cuthbertson-McFarland and Coach Matt Flickinger for the last 5 years that they helped me build our program into one of the top programs in Central Texas.  Coach C. has gone onto work at Dell Inc. and Coach Flick will still be around Bowie teaching English and working on some of his own literary work. Thank you for all the hard work, good laughs, and memories that you have left with our runners and myself.  You will never be forgotten.

***The Area Meet at Marble Falls has been changed to Wed., Apr. 19th from the initial date of Th., Apr. 20th.  Area Meet schedule can now be found under the results tab.

Record setting day for Aleka Neptune and Carolyn Evans

Aleka Neptune broke a 27 year old record on March 31st at Bowie’s own South Austin Relays in the discus.  She threw a 121′ 9 1/2″ and broke the one set in 1990 by Mari Peca of 120′ 3″.

Another congratulations goes out to Carolyn Evans for breaking the school 1600m run record that was set in 1994 by Shaunte Alvarez. She did it by 1 second when she ran a 5:05 at the Texas Relays on Friday, March 31st.  That is two records that Carolyn has broken this year.

Carolyn Evans shatters 3200m School Record

Carolyn shattered the 3200m record this past Saturday with an 11:07.  She ran 13 seconds faster than last week when she tied the record.  It was cold and rainy and she still managed to lap everyone in the race except one.

Because of the rain, the field events were eventually cancelled as were the hurdle races.  Our teams ran almost all the races and pulled out toward the end of the meet when there were only 3 races left for each division because of safety issues.  The Varsity Girls team still placed 2nd overall and the JV girls team placed 3rd.  Well done, Bowie Dawgs.

Great start to our 2017 Track Season

The new track season got under way at our first meet at Bastrop.  The JV Girls and Boys were meet Champions out of 19 schools attending.  Our Varsity girls came in a respectable 5th place overall at this highly competitive meet, as the Varsity boys placed 7th overall.

You can find all results under the “Results” tab for each individual division.

The new meet schedule for the Dragon Relays at Round Rock is now up under the “Meet Schedule” tab.

Carolyn Evans ties the school record in the 3200m run with a time of 11:20.
Congratulations, Carolyn!!!

Recovery Drink

We are off to a (literally) “blazing hot” start this year.  Make sure your son/daughter is getting plenty of fluids all day long.  Also, one of the best recovery drinks that they should consume after a hard workout or race is low fat chocolate milk.
“Serious and amateur athletes alike enjoyed physical recovery benefits when they drank low-fat chocolate milk after a vigorous workout.  The advantages for the study participants were better body composition in the form of more muscle and less fat, improved times while working out and overall better physical shape than peers who consumed sports beverages that just contained carbohydrates.” (read rest of article)
